I haven’t reviewed a couple of football games in a while so I thought I would just go through everything in sports that are on my mind.
First, the national college football championship is set with Alabama vs Clemson. I knew that Clemson was going to overwhelm Oklahoma with their offensive attack and go straight into the Championship game. However, I was most looking forward to the Michigan State vs Alabama because these are 2 very great teams with their own style of play led by 2 great coaches. I was rooting for Michigan State because Alabama already has a couple of national titles under their belt and I have a soft spot for Mark Dantonio (previous Bearcats coach!). Also, it would be fun to watch Alabama get beat by a big 10 school for a 2nd time in the National Playoff format. But with their heisman trophy winner, Alabama steam rolled their way into the Championship game. I’ll be definitely rooting for Clemson. They’ve had a great year and I would like them to beat the mighty Crimson Tide.
After getting beat by Temple in their home conference opener, the UC Bearcats came alive and beat Tulsa. It was embarrassing to see how bad our defense played against Temple. They allowed them to make too many open shots and their defense was downright awful. My dad and I went to the game last night and witnessed the return of the Bearcats defense that we all know and love. Their defense was all over the place. Creating turnovers, deflections, rebounding (Gary Clark: 14) and scoring (Farad Cobb: 21 points). The final score was 76-57. I feel like the score would’ve been a lot less for Tulsa if it weren’t for the refs. I’ve never seen such terrible play calling at a game and it was totally one sided. They got to shoot so many free throws and if it weren’t for the refs, the final would’ve been 76 to 45. But, at the end of the day, it was a Bearcats win. In a couple days, we travel to Texas to take on SMU…very critical matchup.
Last but not least, the Bengals won their final game of the season against the Baltimore Ravens. After the win, I was praying that we would get some help by the Chargers so we can get the bye in the playoffs. However, the Denver Broncos brought back their hero Peyton Manning to bring home the win and clinch the #1 seed and bye in the playoffs. The Bengals will be the #3 seed and we will be facing….the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, every year, I face the conundrum of Bengals breaking their streak and being the mediocre team. We’ve gone into post season play for the past 5 years but we’ve had no wins. It really is sad for the city of Cincinnati that we can’t win 1 playoff win. I am optimistic about this match up because I believe that we can beat the Steelers this time around for a few reasons. This will be a great revenge game ever since the Steelers came into our house and stomped over us. Buttttt…there is the looming fact that we haven’t won 1 post season game and I’m sure it’ll be ingrained in players heads when we play them. I’m pretty much sure that Andy won’t be back so we’ll have to rely on AJ McCarron to carry us into victory. AJ has been ok in his 3 games. He’s not making bad decisions and throwing the ball away if need be. He’s also throwing to open receivers as well. I just hope Hue Jackson will call the right plays against the Steelers. Utilizing Green, Eifert, Sanu and Hill will be for our benefit and we have to play it right. I am not going to say anymore because I don’t wanna jinx anything. All I will say is that it’ll be interesting to see this match up this weekend and hopefully a miracle will happen in the Queen City.
