Oh boy. The 3rd day of this challenge brought up an excellent topic to talk about. Honestly, I could write a novel on pet peeves that annoy me to this day. But, if I can only write about 5, then I’ll do the best of my ability to describe why these are my pet peeves. In all seriousness, some of my pet peeves, I think, are just common sense. I know that the human population is not perfect but it’s just common courtesy to respect and be aware of those around you. So, here they are.
This is not common courtesy or awareness but people that mispronounce my last name is one of my pet peeves. Carskadon. Yes, it’s not a common last name and I’m sure you’re bound to say it wrong but it still drives me nuts when people say it wrong. CAR-skaa-done. My high school and college graduation, the announcers said my name wrong. And of course there were numerous band concerts, solo recitals and other events where the announcer mispronounced my last name. Yes, I’ve gotten used to it but its just one of those pet peeves that will never go away.
Rush hour. We’ve all been there. Frustrated, behind the wheel, and probably cursing under our breath wishing that the traffic would move. I’ll admit that I’m one of those crazy drivers that if you make me upset in any way on the road, I’ll probably drop the F bomb on you. But, road rage is not a pet peeve of mine. There’s handy dandy tool on your car called the turn signal. Use it. It drives me up a wall when I’m driving and some lunatic decides to cut in front of me without using their turn signal. At the end of the day, if I end up hitting that guy that decides to cut in front of me, I’ll be paying the bill since I didn’t keep my distance. Overall, dumb drivers IS a pet peeve of mine. But, the world would be a better place if we could all use the turn signal and make people happy.
Hold the door or open the door for someone. This is a common gesture. Opening doors is not expected day to day but holding them for someone is. It bothers me when I’m inches away from an entrance and the person in front of me does not hold the door open and it shuts in my face. Come on, people. Please. It’s called being polite. I don’t care if the person is 40 feet away from where I am, I’ll wait and hold the door. Opening the door for someone is a different story. It is a grand gesture but I rarely see it today. Guys, you have to do this on dates though. You’ll get major brownie points from your date if you open the door for your pretty lady. Just saying.
There’s a saying I learned in business school. “To be on time, be early, if you’re on time, you’re late.” Tardiness is another pet peeve I have. The above quote is a little extreme for the 21st century. But, it mostly applies when you go to interviews. I, being the expert on interviews, always show up at least 15 minutes for them. I’ve heard so many stories and experienced some where people are late to interviews and when they show up, they act like nothing’s happened. For some odd reason, I like being early to any kind of event whether it’s interviews or meeting with friends. 99% of the time, I’m usually the first one to show up when I’m hanging out with my friends. I don’t mind if my friends are little bit late but if it gets past 20 minutes, then I’ll start to get a little crazy.
However, the #1 pet peeve of mine that I have today is the use of electronics during family/social gatherings. Now that the iPhones and iPads are popular in this day in age and every 8 year old in the country has one, they need to be put down around family. I resonate with this the most because I value family more than anything in the world. I’m blessed to be a part of a huge family that I know will support and help me in any shape or form. I believe that we all need to take time to appreciate and spend time with the family you have because they will always love you no matter what. I’m a cell phone/iPad addict and I spend a lot of time on Instagram, twitter, Facebook and snapchat. But, I’ll have my phone put away when I’m around family gatherings. My niece and nephew need work on this area because they always have their phones and iPads out when we’re with each other but it does drive me insane. Yes, they’re too young to understand values and morals but I just hope that lesson comes soon. I’ll always love them but seeing that just really bothers me. Does that make sense?
What are your pet peeves?
