Before I write about today’s topic, I have to apologize for my hiatus in recent weeks. I knew that taking this challenge would be tough because it’s for 30 straight days and it’s difficult to stay on schedule. Lately, I’ve been really swamped at work and it’s just been really crazy. I had to work overtime plus follow my other tasks that I had to do. I couldn’t find time to blog, but now I do! So, let’s get to it!
I really have no problem on the 21st century music that we have. There are a few artists that I have an opinion on and only some mainstream music that I listen to. I’m a conservative guy and I grew up listening to different music. Being a piano player, I like listening to contemporary, religious, classical songs. The benefit of listening to this genre of music is that it helps your brain tremendously and is a big stress reliever. There’s nothing more relaxing than having a cup of coffee and listening to classical music. I’m not saying I have a problem with mainstream music. I just prefer classical/contemporary instead.
Artists today like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Jason Derulo, Demi Lovato, Bruno Mars, etc. are all influential. They’ve all had success reaching the billboards and creating music that the fans love. Personally, I’m a fan of just a few artists. Bruno Mars, Fifth Harmony, Walk the Moon, Kelly Clarkson, and Taylor Swift are just the few that I listen too. They’re all unique in their different ways but I love listening to their songs every day.
Mainstream music that I don’t listen to are songs that have extremely explicit lyrics. I’m talking about rap and heavy metal genre. That’s the mainstream music I avoid. Music like that really bothers me because having every swear word in just one song is just wrong. I strongly believe that the music you listen reflects who you are. Listening to that type of music wouldn’t be me. The artists that I listed above shows that I like R&B and Pop music and I think that it’s very enjoyable to listen to. Another problem I have with mainstream music doesn’t go directly to the music but the artists themselves. Thankfully, I have no hateful words against the artists I listen to. I think that Bruno, Taylor, and Kelly are all wonderful people and I’ve seen just a little negativity around them when it comes to the media. A perfect example in this case would be Justin Bieber. I know I’ll probably upset many of you but just listen to this logic. I really have no problem with his music. I think his music is good, lyrics are catchy and the rhythms are cool to jam to. However, I don’t like him. There’s a difference. I don’t listen to his music on an everyday basis but if I did, I wouldn’t mind. His music is great. I just don’t like the kid at all. The person that he is in public is annoying. He acts like this selfless, down to earth guy when it comes to interviews and talk shows. But, he can’t man up to his actions when he gets caught on camera. His attitude and selfishness bothers me and I can’t stand it every time he’s on the news and something bad happened…again. There are other artists like him that create good music but I don’t like their personality.
Music today is unique and the population has different tastes to whichever their hearts desires. I have no problem with the music we have. It’s continually being revolutionized and there’s no telling if music will ever stop growing. As I’ve blogged about before, my heart will always belong to Pentatonix. They’re bringing in the old and making it fresh and new. When people think “a Capella”, they think of old, out dated music. Pentatonix has revolutionized how a Capella should be done and making a name for themselves. I know I’m drifting away from the topic, but I’m just saying is Pentatonix is bringing a Capella back into mainstream. No doubt in less than 5 years, people will be begging for more a Capella artists. Enough with the electric loops and beats behind the recording studio. It’s time for some pure, authentic, soulful sounds from the human voice where I know people will love and come to enjoy.
