Since there is only a week left until I travel to Nashville to see my favorite group, Pentatonix, I thought I would list my 10 favorite originals and covers by this group! Now, looking at the library of music that this group has performed, it’s so hard to pick just 10 songs. I’m a hard core pentaholic and I think every song they’ve arranged or composed is unbelievable. From their sing off days to covers to original material, Pentatonix made it hard to rank 10 of my favorites because each song is different from each other but delivers quality content. It took me a while, but here is my top 10!
- Run to You
Released on their 2nd EP Album, PTX Vol. II, “Run to you” is an original song by Pentatonix and co-writer, Ben Braum. I believe that this song shows the true beauty of what a Capella is all about. Just the lyrics, harmonies, and chord progressions makes it so emotional and it gives me goosebumps every time I listen to this song. This track stands out from the rest on this album because there is no upbeat feel to it but just 5 voices being vulnerable and showing that you don’t need a band to back up vocals and reveal the inner beauty of a song.
- Mary, Did you Know?
Covered on their 2nd Christmas album, That’s Christmas to Me, Pentatonix delivers an emotional rendition of 90’s Christmas song written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene. I didn’t know of this song until this album was released. This arrangement captures the true essence of Mary giving birth to the son of God. It has that emotional attention due to its soft, beautiful melodies in the beginning to the rise and climatic point of “great I am.” Pentatonix released a music video of this song which gained 63 million views and it was also No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. No doubt that every time Christmas season rolls around that I am playing this song nonstop.
- That’s Christmas to Me
Album titled track “That’s Christmas to Me” is another original song that does not disappoint. With only 5 voices again, this track makes me want to cozy up with my blanket and drink a cup of hot coca. If you hear the lyrics, Pentatonix tells you the real joy and truth behind Christmas. Behind this song, it shows that PTX is not only capable of doing outstanding covers but amazing original material as well. This album went to be the 4th bestselling album of 2014 and highest charting holiday album. Again, this song showcases only 5 tight harmonies blending together to create a romantic, holiday feel that will put a smile on your face.
Whether I’m in my car or watching their music video of this song, I can’t help but dance. Seriously. This is another original on their self-debut album, Pentatonix, and I could play this on repeat forever. The stomping, clapping and joyful lyrics makes me want to “lose control.” It’s so catchy and cheesy in a way but I just love this song so much. It’s pretty much “music medicine” if anyone that’s having a bad day or just needs a little pick-me-up.
Another original on their self-debut album, Pentatonix, “Craked” literally brings out the best in Scott Hoying. Out of the 5 members, Hoying is the “ref master” and you can hear it all throughout the song. I heard a little preview of this song on their documentary titled Pentatonix: On my way Home. It previewed a little on the song’s catchy rhythms and percussion and it made me impatient because I wanted to hear the whole song! This is simply amazing because of Hoying and how he belts out every note and pitch like it’s nothing.
- Evolution of Beyoncé
If I’m not mistaken, I believe that Pentatonix have done 3 evolution videos. Out of the 3, Beyoncé medley is my favorite. To be honest, I don’t listen to Beyoncé on a daily basis but I know of her popular hits. However, this mash up made me dumbfounded because it showcases each members’ power house vocals in some way. Kevin was completely freakish on his beatboxing skills and I think Avi’s bass vocals were crazier than normal. Throughout each song they went through, Scott, Mitch and Kirstie had their moment and it was beautifully done. This is a 6 minute medley and how PTX did this in one take was just incredible.
Made famous by Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea., Pentatonix captures that very essence on their cover. Before the release of their 2nd EP, PTX released a preview of this song and when I heard it, I got really excited. I think it was because of Avi’s bass melody haha. I can’t put my finger on it but something about this arrangement makes me nod my head and groove when I listen to the beat. I don’t know if its Scott’s ridiculous high range vocals, Mitch’s rendition of Iggy’s rap or Kevin’s singing and beatboxing but this arrangement is definitely one of my favorites that I could listen to all day.
If OMI needs some musical advice, I suggest that he ask Pentatonix. I’m sorry to say it but I think OMI’s “Cheerleader” is the most annoying song I’ve ever heard next to “Who let the Dogs out?” After hearing Pentatonix’s version of this song, I died. While they maintained OMI’s origin of the song, they added a reggae feel which made it so enjoyable. Scott’s baritone, Mitch’s tenor and Kirstie’s alto vocals blend so beautiful together while Avi and Kevin bring in the bass and reggae feel to it. After the bridge when they hit the chorus again, it makes me want to belt out too! While I don’t like the original song, Pentatonix’s version is easily on my top 5. Coincidentally, I have this as my ring tone on my phone.
- Can’t Sleep Love ft. Tink
This is the first single Pentatonix released on their self-debut album and it does not disappoint at all. The single’s release does not feature Tink, while the 2nd version does, which is my favorite. The retro, soulful, 90’s feel makes this song work. The groove, bass, beatboxing and along with the tight harmonies makes this as my 2nd favorite on this list. Tink’s rap completes it as her lyrics match up this song’s meaning. This song with the rest of the album reached to #1 on the Billboards chart, making this the first ever a Capella album to go number 1.
- Daft Punk
Of course, I need to go with the Grammy winning medley as my #1 favorite Pentatonix song. This medley covers “One more Time”, “Celebrate” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” This arrangement is electric and feel good as well. Their music video shows PTX saluting to the Daft Punk band by sporting the sunglasses, unique clothing and crazy contact lenses. This medley, I can tell, was extremely thought out because the transitions and vocals were on point. Pentatonix delivers yet again on another electric, pop arrangement that I think this will be my #1 favorite for a long time.
Reviewing my list, I see that I have more originals as my favorites than their covers. This shows that Pentatonix is continuously branding themselves as mainstream artists. Yes, they’ve had great accomplishments winning Grammys and going in top of the Billboards, but I think they’re not completely there yet. If they continue to release new material, which I’m sure they will, they will bring in more fans that they already have. While some people do enjoy listening to a Capella, they can’t do it on a daily basis. I, however, can listen to it 24/7, 365 days a year, especially Pentatonix. They are definite proof that they’re bringing a Capella and I’m so excited to see them in a week!
